Apprenticeships at A-Plant

An Apprenticeship with A-Plant is your opportunity to learn a skilled trade that will set you up for a great future. The Apprenticeship takes four years to complete, during which time you’ll combine ‘block-release’ courses at a specialist construction college with practical on-the-job training. You will also work towards gaining an NVQ III level qualification.

We’ll give you all the support you need to succeed, as well as a good wage and benefits. In return though, we do ask that you’re very serious about building your career with us. It’s a big commitment and there’s plenty of hard work to do, but if you’re enthusiastic and keen to learn, you’ll get on just fine.

High quality training is absolutely key to the continued success of A-Plant, as our Chief Executive Officer, Sat Dhaiwal explains:

Sat Dhaiwal, Chief Executive Officer, A-Plant

"Our competitive advantage comes from our range of product, our IT systems and our national network of locations. All of this needs to be backed up by the quality of our equipment and high service levels. Our people make the difference and we as a business want highly trained engineers to support our service to our customers and as such the Apprentice programme is crucial to ensuring our high service levels in the future. Moving forward, not only have we decided to continue with the current high intake of apprentices but significantly increase the number this year."

We currently have three Apprenticeship Programmes:

Apprentice Fitters

Based in one of our national network of depots

As a key member of one of our depot teams, you’ll make sure that all equipment is serviced, maintained and repaired to the highest standards. There are many different types of equipment, so you have to be adaptable and able to turn your hand to a lot of different tasks. To join us, you must have a keen interest in engineering and mechanics, as well as a friendly and helpful personality.

Apprentice Drivers

Based in Kendal, Stockton on Tees, Hull and York

During this intensive driver training programme you will have the chance to gain a range of qualifications and licences, including a Large Goods Vehicle Licence, a Fork Lift Truck Licence and a Certificate of Professional Competence in road haulage. To join us, you must have a full driving licence and will need to successfully complete a driver competency assessment.

Commercial Apprentices

As a Commercial Apprentice, A-Plant will support you through an NVQ Level 2 in Customer Service. You will be office based, handling customer enquiries and orders over the phone as well as face to face interaction with customers. You will be required to use internal IT systems as well as produce written communications. You will have the opportunity to gain a greater insight into the Industrial equipment rental business through our day release programme in conjunction with Reaseheath College in Cheshire (see below).

Reaseheath College

Part of the apprenticeship requires you to attend our approved college via block release and normally you will attend college for three weeks out of every nine i.e. in the business for six weeks, at college for three. Travel expenses, accommodation and food are provided as part of the funding. For Drivers and Commercial Apprentices, specific details will be explained during the application process.

Melvin Johnston, Reaseheath College

Reaseheath are proud to be working in partnership with A-Plant to develop and deliver a high class apprenticeship programme for service engineers. Apprentices are able to combine their on the job training with technical and practical study at the college, working towards a national advanced apprenticeship qualification. The programme started in September 2007 with 28 apprentices who are all showing signs of being very successful on the programme. We look forward to their graduation in three years time.

Now meet a couple of our existing apprentices to see how they rate their courses and then decide if it’s right for you.
